Pilates is a form of low-impact body conditioning developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It is designed to –

  • Improve flexibility
  • Strengthen muscles
  • Improve posture, co-ordination and balance

Pilates exercises target the core muscles and work the whole body.

One of the many good things about Pilates is it can be of benefit to most people. The exercises can be modified and adapted from beginner through to advanced level. Office workers, runners, cyclists, gym enthusiasts or anyone simply looking to improve flexibility and strength could consider scheduling some Pilates into their week.

It’s also a great way to calm the mind and reduce stress.

The class takes place on a mat. Comfortable clothing that allows free movement is recommended. Small equipment is sometimes used such as a soft ball, exercise band or block.
